Antihyperglycemic Activity Antioxidant Enzymes and Histopathological Studies of Salacia oblonga in Streptozotocin Nicotinamide Induced Type 2 Diabetic Rats

Salacia oblonga (Celastraceae), a traditional ayurvedic herbal plant commonly called as ponkoranti. The antidiabetic and Histopathological studies of aqueous stem extracts carried in Streptozotocin-nicotinamide induced diabetic rats which were orally treated with glibenclamide at lower (250 mg/kg) higher (500 concentrations. normal administrated for the oral glucose tolerance test 0, 30, 60 120 min after load. Fasting blood levels measured by oxidase strips glucometer. protective effect was evaluated studying antioxidant enzymes, lipid peroxidation changes treatment period. Treatment done 500 mg/kg extract produced more improved protein (1.18±1.45 mg), superoxide dismutase (229.15±1.52 U/mg protein), Catalase (19.51±1.35 U/min/mg Glutathione (1.54±.29 peroxidase (1.74±1.56 U/min/mg) reduced (1.76±2.31 μm/min/mg). From study, it found that potentially increase antioxidants peroxidation. significantly level (p<0.001). alterations restored significant on vital organs such liver pancreas demonstrates usage potential endangered plant. spectral analysis (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) explored natural chemical constituents responsible activity. Further preclinical clinical trials are required to confirm extract.
